The Chamber's Environmental Committee is Accepting Nominations for the 2010 John Biasini Environmental Excellence Awards

The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana is accepting nominations for the John Biasini Environmental Excellence Awards. These awards are given to businesses for innovative environmental practices to reduce waste, air emissions, or costs and benefit the health and welfare of the Southwest Indiana region.

Steve Schaefer, Vice President of Public Policy for The Chamber said, “The leadership of The Chamber’s Environmental Committee has developed this program to encourage environmental stewardship and to recognize those companies that take extra effort to improve our region’s environment.  We’re pleased about the program and look forward to announcing our recipients this fall.”

Nominated projects, facilities or individuals must be:
·         Chamber members in good standing
·         Must focus on significant environmental protection activity in 2009
·         Must promote environmental excellence
·         Agree to share their project or program information with others through a written presentation made available to other Chamber members
·         Must present their project to others during environmental committee/luncheon

Awards are available in five categories.
1.    Energy/Renewable Resources – This category is for projects or programs that prevent pollution by either reducing energy usage or by producing energy using very low emissions technology.  This includes efforts to significantly increase the energy efficiency of building or processes.
2.    Pollution Prevention/Source Reduction – A business in this category has reduced the use of hazardous materials or strength of wastewater through pollution prevention.  This includes input change, product reformulation, production process redesign and/or modification.
3.    Recycling/Reuse – This category recognizes outstanding reuse or recycling programs that use innovative methods to reduce the amount of waste sent to final disposal.  Projects can address commercial or industrial wastes or “buy recycled” purchasing initiatives.
4.    Land Use – This category recognizes projects that incorporate innovative and effective methods or practices to preserve or improve local land use.  Qualifying projects will include underutilized land or Brownfield redevelopment. 5.    Environmental Leadership – This category recognizes environmental leadership.  It is given to an individual whose work on environmental issues goes above and beyond their regular duties.  This honor is by nomination by their peers.

An independent committee of environmental professionals and Chamber officials will review nominations.  It is possible that no awards will be issued in a particular category.  Recipients will be notified at the November monthly Environmental Committee meeting.

The deadline to submit a nomination is Wednesday, September 27, 2010.
